The US wastes more energy than any other country. And with all the problems Earth is having right now with pollution and the depletion of our ozone layer, we should help economize power, which in turn will help our world.
We will focus on several things that all of us can do to conserve energy and save money at the same time. These are very simple things that any person can do, we only need to make the decision to do them in order to help our environment and ourselves.
Just turning off the lights when you exit a room in your home is one of the easiest things you can do to save energy. Most people will exit a room for 10 to 15 minutes to go to the kitchen to make a snack or to do something else and they leave the light on in the room they left because they will going back in to the room shortly. If you do this even for only two times a day, that is more or less 30 minutes of consumed power for simply this one light. While 30 minutes doesn’t seem like much, bear in mind that millions upon millions of people do this each day. If you total it all up, one individual could be wasting at the least 182 hours of electrical power each year. Next try to multiply that by just 1 million individuals. The amount adds up to a staggering 182 million hours of squandered electricity that is basically coming from one single room in every person’s house.
Another wasteful habit that many people do is switch the lights on when walking into a room. It’s something many of us do without thinking. I catch myself doing it as well. The trouble is that even during daytime when you have no need for the light because you’re getting more than enough sunlight to light up the room. And yet, we come into a brightly lit room and flip the light switch to on. And on top of that, because of the natural light coming in, we have the tendency to forget we flipped the room light on in the first place and leave it on for the rest of the day. You just have to make a conscious effort to not switch the lights on during the day unless you have to.
One huge problem is people leaving things like TVs and radios on the entire day even if they are not in the same room. A great example is my mom; she’s forever leaving the Telly on in the living room, even though she’s is in the kitchen cooking a meal or cleaning the rest of the house. This is a huge waste of electricity. Thus, if you are not watching the telly, only turn it off.
These are just a few things that we all can do really easily but can have a huge effect on our efforts to save electrical energy and to save the environment. If every person makes just a small effort to do these very simple things, it can add up to make a big difference.
